Angel’s Share Ken Loach’s movie set in Scotland. The leading man Paul Brannigan whom I have not heard of plays Jimmy a criminal who is trying to turn his life around after a spell in prison and just avoiding going back inside for assault on a group of lads with an extend family feud which seems to never be resolved. With a baby on the way the court decides 300 days community service is the way forward.

The leader of the Community service programme leader John Henshaw playing Harry takes the motley crew under his wing and after taking Jimmy to hospital where his girlfriend is in labour he witnesses an altercation between Jimmy and his girlfriends uncles who proceed to beat him to a pulp.

Harry takes Jimmy to his home and when they hear Jimmy has a son “Luke” Harry proposes a toast, opening a bottle of Whisky, its Jimmy’s first ever experience of the spirit, this in turns leads Jimmy to realise he has a “nose’ for identifying the different whisky’s a rare trait.

The plot moves swiftly along with humour but grit allowing the viewer to experience a world they would not necessarily  encounter in their every day life.

Although the group use crime to turn their lives around you can almost admire their determination, after all they are doing what they do best robbing !
